Migration is one of life's greatest teachers.
It changes far more than our address. It reshapes our perspective, expands our horizons, and introduces us to new cultures, systems, and ways of thinking. For millions of Nigerians living abroad, migration has opened doors to education, careers, innovation, and opportunities that may once have seemed impossible.
Yet while migration transforms our environment, it should never erase our identity.
One of the most beautiful aspects of living in another country is the opportunity to learn. We discover new approaches to work, leadership, governance, customer service, technology, and community life. These experiences broaden our understanding of the world and often make us better professionals and better citizens.
But growth should never require us to abandon the values that shaped us.
Our resilience.
Our sense of community.
Our generosity.
Our respect for family.
Our belief that success carries a responsibility to lift others.
These qualities are among Nigeria's greatest strengths. They are part of the social capital that millions of Nigerians carry with them across the world.
The challenge, therefore, is not choosing between two cultures. It is learning how to bring out the best in both.
This is where the idea of the Global Nigerian becomes especially important.
A Global Nigerian is someone who embraces global excellence while remaining connected to their roots. They are willing to learn from the world, but they also recognise that their heritage has something valuable to offer the world in return.
Migration is not about replacing one identity with another.
It is about enriching your identity.
As author Maya Angelou wisely said:
"We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty."
Migration is a journey of change. But like the butterfly, transformation should reveal your best qualities—not cause you to lose them.
As Global Nigerians, we have a unique opportunity. We can build bridges between cultures, strengthen relationships across borders, and contribute to both our adopted communities and the country we still call home.
Perhaps that is the true gift of migration.
Not becoming someone else.
