Cultivating The Habit of Positive Thinking

Thoughts are a necessary part of our daily lives that crop up whether we want them or not. But, the path your thought follows, is largely dependent on you. 

Positive thinking is an intentional action that must be cultivated to aid a positive lifestyle. So how can you cultivate it? Here’s how: 

  • Surround Yourself With Positive People

Remember the saying, evil company corrupts good manners? It is very valid here too. If you surround yourself with pessimistic people, your outlook on life will be defined by pessimism because that is what your senses have been fed.

  • Engage In Positive Self-Talk

When things don't go as planned, it's easy to go hard on yourself, pick at every little thing and be your greatest critic but this shouldn't be. Be conscious of what your mind says, when negativity creeps in, be intentional about correcting it immediately. 

According to research, a little change in the way you talk to yourself has a great influence on the regulation of your feelings, thoughts, and behaviour. 

  • Practise Gratitude

Gratitude is simply being thankful. It's not an attitude that should surface in just the good times, it should be present in the bad too. You can consider gratitude as a lens through which it is best to see life.

Gratitude conditions your mind to house, identify, and birth positivity.

  • Highlight the areas where you are most negative 

This is key. Once you can highlight these areas, you know where to channel more intentionality to. To identify them, you can introspect or ask your, friends or family, to help out. 

Positive thinking rests on words. Words are powerful, but they can be your power. You can wield it in your favour. So be intentional.

Lastly, cultivating the art of positive thinking cannot be done in a day. So take it one step at a time.
