Don't Let Your Dream Expire Abroad

"Migration is a platform, not the destination."

For millions of Nigerians, the decision to leave home is one of the most significant choices they will ever make. It is rarely a decision made lightly. Behind every visa application, every airport farewell, and every new beginning lies a dream—one that is often rooted in hope, sacrifice, and the desire for a better future.

Some leave in search of world-class education. Others pursue career opportunities that may not be readily available at home. Many migrate with the goal of providing a better life for their families, building businesses, acquiring new skills, or creating opportunities for future generations.

Yet, as the years pass, an important question quietly emerges:

Do we still remember why we left?

When Survival Replaces Purpose

The excitement of arriving in a new country soon gives way to the realities of everyday life. There are bills to pay, careers to build, children to raise, mortgages to service, and new communities to integrate into. These are all important responsibilities.

However, there is a subtle danger.

Without realizing it, many people become so occupied with surviving that they stop pursuing the dream that inspired their journey in the first place.

"I'll start the business next year."

"I'll write the book when life becomes less busy."

"I'll invest when I have saved enough."

"I'll go back to university one day."

These are familiar promises we make to ourselves. Unfortunately, tomorrow has a habit of becoming next year, and next year can easily become a decade.

The destination changes, but the dream remains on hold.

Migration Is Not the Dream

One of the biggest misconceptions about migration is that arriving abroad means the dream has already been achieved.

In reality, migration is rarely the destination.

It is the beginning of a new chapter.

The International Organization for Migration consistently emphasizes that migration is more than the movement of people. It is also the movement of knowledge, skills, innovation, culture, and social capital. These assets have the potential to benefit both countries of origin and countries of destination when migrants remain engaged and purposeful.

A new country can provide opportunities that were previously out of reach. It can offer access to better education, global professional networks, advanced technology, and broader markets. Yet these opportunities only become meaningful when they are intentionally used to pursue a larger purpose.

Changing your location does not automatically transform your life.

Purpose does.

Success Is More Than a New Address

Many migrants achieve what they initially set out to do. They secure meaningful employment, establish successful careers, and create financial stability for their families. These are remarkable achievements that deserve to be celebrated.

But there is another question worth asking.

Have we become the people we hoped to become?

Professional success should not come at the expense of personal purpose.

Financial security should not replace lifelong growth.

Comfort should never become the enemy of contribution.

Leadership expert John C. Maxwell famously observed, *"A dream becomes reality as a result of your actions."* Dreams are not fulfilled simply because we cross borders. They are fulfilled because we continue taking deliberate steps towards them.

Think Beyond Yourself

Perhaps the greatest opportunity migration offers is not simply a higher income or a better lifestyle.

It is perspective.

Living in another country exposes us to new ideas, different cultures, innovative systems, and diverse ways of solving problems. Those experiences become valuable when they are shared.

Whether through mentoring young professionals, investing in businesses, collaborating with institutions, supporting innovation, or simply changing perceptions about Nigeria through excellence, every Global Nigerian has the ability to create impact that extends beyond personal success.

Migration should enlarge our vision, not narrow it.

Don't Let the Dream Fade

If you are reading this from London, Toronto, Houston, Dubai, Johannesburg, or anywhere else in the world, I encourage you to pause for a moment and remember the person you were before you boarded that plane.

What dream kept you awake at night?

What vision made the sacrifices worthwhile?

What future were you determined to build?

If that dream still matters—and I believe it does—then don't allow routine to replace purpose.

Keep learning.

Keep growing.

Keep building.

Keep contributing.

Most importantly, keep dreaming.

Because migration gave you a new platform.

What you build on that platform is still up to you.

As I often remind myself:
