In a landmark event held in Bristol, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State was bestowed with the honour of Patron of the Centre for African Social and Economic Transformation (CASET) during its official launch at the University of the West of England (UWE).

Governor Sanwo-Olu delivered a compelling keynote address where he highlighted the urgent need to rethink higher education across the African continent. Emphasising the importance of entrepreneurial, practical, and real-world-connected learning, the Governor drew from the Lagos experience, showcasing the transformative impact of empowering young people in areas such as technology, arts, and enterprise.

“In Lagos, we’ve seen what’s possible when young people are given the tools to thrive,” he stated. “CASET represents a powerful new platform to scale this impact across Africa.”

Over the past six years, Lagos State has emerged as a model of transformational leadership, leveraging public-private partnerships to deliver ambitious infrastructure projects, including:

A brand-new and expanding metro rail system
Africa’s largest rice processing mill
West Africa’s most modern deep seaport
A fully integrated transport network of road, rail, and waterways

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that ambition and audacity are core Lagos values, driving the state’s approach to large-scale development and people-first policies.

He noted that CASET’s vision of empowering people and communities aligns perfectly with Lagos State’s mission to unlock opportunities and improve lives.

“Together with universities, governments, businesses, and global partners, we can build an Africa defined not by its challenges, but by its energy, innovation, and ambition,” he concluded.
