Lagos: Africa’s Second-Largest City Economy


Lagos has emerged as Africa’s second-largest city economy, boasting a GDP of $259 billion based on Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). Governor Sanwo-Olu described this milestone as a testament to the state’s economic resilience, strategic investments, and dedication to inclusive growth.


Empowering Women and Combating Gender-Based Violence


In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering women through tuition-free training, entrepreneurial support, and protection against gender-based violence. Thousands of eco-friendly stoves were distributed, and First Lady Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu was recognized for her advocacy in maternal and child healthcare.



Investing in Digital Skills and Education


Global Wissen Consult has expressed interest in partnering with the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education to enhance digital skills training for students in state-owned institutions. Commissioner Tolani Sule highlighted the government's dedication to equipping students with the knowledge required to thrive in the global digital economy.


Infrastructure Expansion: Lekki International Airport and More


Governor Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his commitment to delivering major infrastructure projects, including the Lekki International Airport. Aviation regulators are set to inspect the project site next week, signaling progress in its development. Additionally, the governor emphasized ongoing investments in Alaro City and the Lekki Free Trade Zone.


Advancing Maternal and Child Healthcare


The Lagos State Office of SDGs has partnered with HERhealthEQ, a New York-based organization, to improve maternal and child healthcare by donating 10 Butterfly iQ+ handheld ultrasound devices. This initiative highlights the importance of technology in bridging healthcare gaps.


Leadership Development and Workforce Training


Renowned leadership expert Fela Durotoye mentored Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy Fellows on purpose-driven leadership, reinforcing Lagos' commitment to developing young leaders. Simultaneously, the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments and Training has conducted five high-impact programs for civil servants, ensuring a competent workforce.


Global Recognition for Combating Gender-Based Violence


The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) received commendation from UK Parliament members for its efforts in tackling sexual and gender-based violence. The delegation, led by MP Kate Osamor, pledged to strengthen legislative partnerships to further these efforts.


Support for Pregnant Women Amidst Economic Challenges


In response to food inflation, the Lagos State Government distributed essential food items to vulnerable pregnant women, reaffirming its commitment to social welfare and maternal health.


Fostering a Safe and Inclusive Workplace


In collaboration with Tolaram, the DSVA sensitized over 350 Power Oil employees on workplace harassment, ensuring a safer work environment as part of the 2025 International Women’s Day celebrations.


Boosting Nollywood and the Creative Economy


Governor Sanwo-Olu and First Lady Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu unveiled the MAKEMATION Film Project, bringing together Nollywood actors, industry leaders, and government officials to support Lagos’ creative economy.


Enhancing Data Privacy and Smart Healthcare Solutions


The Lagos State Data Protection Steering Committee convened to implement stronger data privacy measures. Additionally, stakeholders met to discuss the Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP), a digital initiative set to revolutionize healthcare delivery.


Infrastructure and Urban Development Initiatives


The Lagos State Government has commenced the reconstruction of Lagos Theatre in Oregun, transforming it into a world-class cultural hub. The administration is also improving building control standards through the Certified Accreditors’ Training Programme.

Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat emphasized the importance of peace, unity, and ethical governance at major Ramadan lectures, urging Nigerians to embrace technology responsibly while upholding moral values.

The Lagos State Audit Service Commission awarded commendation letters to outstanding staff under its performance appraisal system, reinforcing a culture of excellence in public service.

The Lagos Economic Development Update (LEDU) for 2025 has been unveiled, outlining policies for economic diversification and sustainable development.

Following a gas tanker explosion at Otedola Bridge, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured residents of improved safety measures and stricter regulations.


Revitalizing Tourism and Cultural Heritage


Lagos Tourism Ambassador Pelumi Nubi met with state officials to discuss tourism promotion efforts, coinciding with the anniversary of her historic London-to-Lagos road trip. Additionally, British Parliament members toured the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, reinforcing international collaboration in tourism and culture.
