Pres. Tinubu - This Day Man Of The Year

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was celebrated as THISDAY’s Man of the Year for 2024, a recognition that underscored his audacious reforms, resilience, and determination to steer Nigeria through challenging times.

The president’s bold approach to governance earned him this accolade, as he demonstrated a rare blend of grit and conviction in the face of adversity.

Tinubu, who had campaigned on the slogan emi lo kan (“it’s my turn”), navigated some of the most turbulent moments of his presidency with a focus on transformation. Early in his tenure, he reaffirmed his resolve to prioritize reforms, famously stating during a media interview, “You can’t be doing the same thing and expect different outcomes.” This declaration set the tone for his administration’s ambitious agenda

One of Tinubu’s most defining decisions was the removal of the petroleum subsidy. While the policy had been legislated under the previous administration, the task of managing its repercussions fell squarely on his shoulders. Similarly, his decision to float the naira and allow market forces to determine its value was another controversial but necessary move aimed at stabilizing Nigeria’s economy

Tinubu’s push for local government autonomy, despite opposition from governors, highlighted his commitment to grassroots development. Drawing on his experience as a former governor, he championed reforms that he believed would benefit the collective good, even if they proved unpopular. The president also faced criticism over his tax reform bills, which sparked regional tensions. However, Tinubu remained steadfast, emphasizing during his presidential media chat that there would be no retreat on these reforms.

Aware of the economic hardships caused by some of his policies, Tinubu implemented measures to cushion their effects. These included the introduction of CNG buses as a buffer for subsidy removal and unprecedented financial support to state governments to mitigate the challenges faced by citizens. His administration also witnessed a resurgence of trade surplus, an increase in external reserves beyond $40 billion, and the revival of moribund refineries.

On the global stage, Tinubu played a pivotal role as ECOWAS chairman, navigating the complexities of unconstitutional changes in governments within West Africa. Despite the political instability in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, Tinubu sought diplomatic solutions while maintaining the region’s stability.

Though his leadership style drew both praise and criticism, Tinubu’s courage to take difficult decisions and his unwavering focus on reforms set him apart. Critics acknowledged the need for more inclusive and consultative approaches, but they could not deny his impact as a transformative leader.

In the end, Tinubu’s resilience, boldness, and vision solidified his status as the most consequential Nigerian of 2024, earning him THISDAY’s prestigious Man of the Year honor.
